Chemical Protection Suits From Total Protection

Chemical incidents regularly make the news as spillages and leaks have not only potential environmental repercussions but can also be dangerous to the local community.  These incidents require specialist equipment to deal with and now Total Protection (UK), the leading supplier of breathing apparatus, workplace noise monitors and portable gas detection systems have a range of chemical protection suits.

One such incident that made the news recently was the collapse of part of a chemical storage building in Slough.  A fork lift truck struck a part of the building structure causing a wall and part of the roof to collapse.  The area was cleared, and all water courses and steam to the building were isolated in addition to a full chemical incident being declared.  Fire fighters in specialist equipment dealt with the collapse and the area was fully cordoned off and a specialist contractor brought in to manage the structure.

Chemical Protection Suits from Total Protection (UK) are designed for use when working in an environment that contains hazardous chemicals.  The range starts from a basic splash suit to a full gas tight suit for use with breathing apparatus.  The protection suits are available in a wide range of material and the material type is dictated by the chemical strength and hazard.

Sales and marketing director at Total Protection (UK), Mark Haylett said, “Chemical incidents are all too common and require specialist equipment and personnel to deal with them.  We supply t
he Respirex Limited Life Type 1A gas tight chemical protective suit which is of one piece construction,  it is fully encapsulating, covering both the wearer and the breathing apparatus. The suit incorporates the latest design technology and is compatible with a wide range of breathing apparatus.”

The Respirex Limited Life Type 1A suit features polymer rubber outer gloves laminated to a highly chemically resistant inner glove fitted by means of a locking cuff mechanism.  The suit also features a ‘bat-wing’ sleeve design for ease of movement in the suit and the adjustable internal support belt enables users of varying sizes to comfortably wear the suit.

Mr Haylett from the safety equipment specialists added, “We also stock the Respirex GTB which is a reusable Type 1A ‘gas tight’ Hazmat chemical protection suit covering both the wearer and  breathing apparatus. It comes supplied with safety gloves and either integral heavy duty safety boots or integral socks. This suit is suitable for use with all types of self contained breathing apparatus.”

Total Protection stock a huge portfolio of products including, gas detection equipment, breathing apparatus, water leak detection equipment, cable location, height safety and noise monitoring equipment in addition to their chemical protection suits.

Total Protection UK Provide Breath Of Fresh Air To The Met Police

Experts in the supply of safety equipment and services, Total Protection UK, are set to offer their revolutionary BA60D Mk II Mobile Breathing Air Compressor to the Metropolitan Police.

The £60,000 order was part of the Clean Air Vehicle Project to ensure that a vehicle can be deployed to a vast spectrum of incidents currently being undertaken, where working at depth in an underground system was previously very restricted because of the lack of clean air which resulted in reduced working times.

Dubbed as Factair’s premiere mobile breathing air compressor,
producing 1700 l/min (60 cfm), the BA60D Mk II Mobile Breathing Air Compressor has been designed specifically for applications where multiple users need a breathing air supply and for RPE, which has high airflow requirements.

Mark Haylett from the firm who provide Breathing Apparatus, Confined Space Equipment, Gas Detection and Height Safety equipment, said, “The BA60D Mk II Mobile Breathing Air Compressor is ideal for work on petrochemical sites and nuclear decommissioning projects and wherever there is a breathing air requirement for an extended duration.

Incorporating a Deutz diesel engine and driving an Atlas Copco rotary screw compressor, the self-contained unit produces breathing air to a quality exceeding the criteria laid down in the BS EN12021.

The unit is also sound attenuated to ensure that noise levels are also compliant with the EC2000/14/EC directive and contains a spillage free frame to ensure that the user is safe at all times.

Total Protection Work To Prevent Height Safety Disasters Right Here In The UK

As recent US reports indicate, a total of 12 construction workers have died so far this year in the city of Manhattan as a result of ineffective height safety equipment or training. Mark Haylett from Total Protection UK is working to prevent the same dim picture right here on UK soil.

According to the Health and Safety Executive falls at height in 2005 and 2006 accounted for almost 46 fatal accidents right here in the UK, and as the credit crunch continues, and many employers are tempted to cut corners, this year is set to be one of the most dangerous yet for construction workers.

As stated by the Work at Height Regulations 2005 (amended 2007), all employers should ‘do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anyone from falling. Duty holders must also avoid work at height where they can, use work equipment or other measures to prevent falls where they cannot avoid working at height and where they cannot eliminate the risk of a fall, use work equipment or other measures to minimise the distance and consequences should a fall occur.’

Mr Haylett, whose company offer everything from gas detection equipment, breathing apparatus, noise monitoring equipment and height safety equipment, said, “It is essential that employers take heed of the warnings and realise that the deaths in the US recently were not down to chance. Height safety can be a complex issue and there are many preventative measures, one of which is working in restraint.”

Allowing workers enough access and mobility to reach a leading edge, working in restraint allows workers to carry on with their tasks without the danger of a fall from height. There are three types of restraint and these include adjustable restraint, which involves a line with an adjustment mechanism, which allows the user to personally adjust his or her equipment, fixed length restraint, which involves a line of a specific length, which prevents access beyond the fall hazard, and a running line restraint system which involves a horizontal line, which is used alongside an adjustable restraint which makes sure that the anchorage remains behind the user. If working at height cannot be prevented, work positioning then becomes an important consideration.

Mr Haylett, from the firm who offer a wide range of height safety solutions added, “Work positioning is when the user is suspended by equipment in their work position. If a user is fully reliant upon a work positioning system then a secondary system is generally required as a back up in case of failure. The secondary system may be a work positioning system or, in most cases a fall arrest system. Common equipment used in work positioning can include harnesses, lanyards and backup systems that make use of a vertical line.”

Finally, if a fall is allowed to occur, fall arrest is a vital consideration. Once the user has fallen the fall arrest equipment arrests the fall. With a fall arrest lanyard the potential fall may be significant and a shock absorber is required in order to reduce the impact the user receives. In the case of fall arrest blocks, they minimise the impact by reacting quickly to arrest the fall before the user gains momentum. Vertical Safety Line Systems use a combination of shock absorption and fall limitations to control the impact the user receives, all of which should be provided by the employer.

Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 (amended 2007), duty holders also have a responsibility to ensure that all work at height is properly organised, those involved in work at height are trained and fully competent and that the equipment used for work is properly inspected.

Mr Haylett added, “It is essential that those in charge of site safety seek out further information if they are unsure of best practice methods regarding height safety. Anyone requiring further information is advised to visit our website and we can certainly help with any enquiries.”

Total Protection UK To Offer Protection From Swine Flu

With Swine Flu experts claiming that a worldwide pandemic could be on the cards leading to a death toll of up to 750,000 in the UK alone, many firms are rapidly selling out of face masks and ordering in new batches to cope with demand. The health and safety equipment specialists at Total Protection UK have huge supplies of masks at reasonable prices as they anticipate the Swine Flu outbreak to get considerably worse over the next few weeks. Here their Sales and Marketing Director, Mark Haylett, highlights why protection is better than cure.

With eight confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Britain so far and a further 257 suspected cases, it seems that everyone is starting to panic, including the NHS, who are working out strategies, in the event of the Swine Flu saga being declared as a phase six hazard by The World Health Organisation.

Mr. Haylett from the firm which provides Breathing Apparatus, Confined Space Equipment, Gas Detection and Height Safety equipment, said, “Our masks have been selling like hot cakes, and fortunately we have them stock piled to cope with demand. If consumers are having trouble finding masks online, they should visit our website at www.totalprotectionuk.com and we can help.”

Experts are advising us all to take extra precautions including washing our hands regularly and sneezing into a handkerchief to stop the virus from spreading, but there is still no guarantee that you will not catch it even if these measures are followed. Wearing a suitable mask when in close proximity to infected persons, can help to protect you from the spread of infection, but with so many on the market, it can be difficult to choose the right one, especially in the case of a global pandemic.

Mr. Haylett added, “The World Health Organisation and other international bodies recommend using a mask that meets the FFP2 standard as a minimum. Health officials are advising that homemade masks and surgical masks, will certainly not protect you against Swine Flu. Masks that meet the FFP2 standard come stamped, so if in doubt have a look at the mask itself.

“I would advise anyone purchasing a mask for the protection of Swine Flu to purchase a mask from the MSA Affinity FR and Affinity Plus range. These masks are lightweight, comfortable for everyday use and the Affinity FR range even includes an improved optional exhalation valve. When these outbreaks occur it is essential that you take precautions should a global pandemic occur, that way, when everyone is stock piling masks at the very last minute, you can rest safe in the knowledge that you are prepared when it comes to both yours and your families health.”

Breathe Easy With Total Protection UK

With an increase in accidents at work, employers need to make sure that ‘despite the credit crunch, breathing apparatus is not one of the casualties’. This is the message of Deryck Wicks, Managing Director of Total Protection UK, the leading provider of safety equipment.

The law is very clear that breathing apparatus should be adequate and provide the wearer with effective protection, be suitable for the intended use and be correctly maintained, examined and tested, but some firms are still snubbing safety in favour of profits.

Sales and Marketing Director, Mark Haylett from Total Protection UK, which is the leading firm in Breathing Apparatus, Confined Space Equipment, Gas Detection and Height Safety equipment, said, “We are pleased to be able to offer our customers with the very latest cutting edge safety equipment. One of our most popular products is our MSA AirGO Pro. It is by far the best breathing apparatus set on the market as it offers not only low cost of ownership but its state of the art components ensure long life and minimal maintenance.”

One of the main problems encountered with traditional breathing apparatus is that of stress and fatigue. The AirGo Pro offers the user with an ergonomically designed back plate, which evenly distributes weight and keeps the unit close to the body, which in turn reduces strain. Approved to EN 137:2006 [2] standards, the AirGo Pro also features a comfortable, padded shoulder straps and hip belt, which can be easily adjusted to suit all users. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 340 people died between 1999 and 2007, highlighting the stark reality of work related incidents in the UK.

Mr. Haylett added, “The market is flooded with so many breathing apparatus products, and that can be extremely confusing. Employers should always speak to a professional to get sound yet practical advice, especially when it affects the health and well-being of your employees”. PPE & Safety Equipment at Work = ESSENTIAL!

The provision of health, safety and welfare in your workplace is an essential, whether you are an employee or the employer. The Government’s stringent guidelines are obviously in place to protect people from slips, trips, falls and other hazards at work – but they are also of great advantage to companies and businesses.

As long as you, the employer, meet the duty of care guidelines, as set out by the Health and Safety Executive, it really is then a case of covering your back. But Total Protection UK, a specialist in the provision of safety equipment and services, want to draw your attention to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The term refers to all types of equipment used or worn in the work place, including protective clothing and safety equipment, protecting those working in that environment from one or more risks to their health, safety and welfare.

Mark Haylett from Total Protection UK, which supplies gas detection equipment, breathing apparatus, and height safety equipment, said: “It is absolutely essential that employers and businesses take these regulations very seriously. At the end of the day, it is up to them to ensure that their workers are able to do their jobs in a safe working environment. We are able to provide advice and guidance to ensure that businesses and companies are investing in the right kind of PPE and safety equipment.”

According to the Health and Safety Executive, the PPE at Work Regulations 1992 states that the employer must provide this equipment (they cannot ask for money from an employee for PPE, whether it is returnable or not). Additionally, these regulations also require that people are trained on how to use the PPE properly and that the PPE must be used, worn and stored correctly – but prior to any use, the equipment must be tested.

Take, for example, Total Protection UK’s range of breathing apparatus, all of which meet European standards required of safety equipment. Disposable, half and full masks, in addition to filters, escape masks, powered air purifying respirators and fresh-air breathing apparatus are essential examples of PPE in certain professions.

Mr. Haylett added, “The type of safety equipment we stock is exactly the kind of PPE most workers require and I cannot stress enough how important it is for companies who are unsure about the PPE they need to come forward.”For more information on PPE and the PPE at Work Regulations 1992, visit: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg174.pdf.

‘Smaller Firms Are Often Unaware Of Their Legal Duties’, Warn Safety Specialists

‘Smaller firms are often unaware of their legal duties’, warns safety equipment and service specialists, Total Protection UK, as recent figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) paints a dim picture of the safeguards laid out by many in the property and construction sector.

The statement was a stark wake up call to many, after the HSE found that 340 people died between 1999 and 2007 while working in the property and construction sector and last year alone these industries were responsible for 52% of construction fatalities with electrocution and accidents from working at height accounting for many of these.

Sales and Marketing director, Mark Haylett from Total Protection UK, who are the leading firm offering breathing apparatus, Confined Space Equipment, Gas Detection and height safety equipment, said, “It seems that many site managers are cutting corners, especially during the economic downturn for a number of reasons. These reasons can stem from the added cost to having bigger fish to fry since the downturn took hold last summer.”

Many smaller firms fail to realise that they do in fact have a legal obligation to their employees under The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to ensure that employers take active steps to assess the various risks to safety and take measures to tackle them. One of the main requirements under the act is that employers carry out risk assessments and record the significant findings, and make the necessary arrangements to implement the measures needed.

The act also requires employers to put emergency procedures in place and offer full training to their workforce to help prevent work-based accidents before they occur. Mr Haylett added, “Sure it can be tempting to cut costs wherever necessary, especially during the financially difficult times, but health and safety equipment can be purchased at very reasonable prices- and can you put a price on the lives of your employees?”

22 year-old Nimesh Joshi from Leicester, had an accident at work six years ago, he said, “I was at work and went into the warehouse to bring stock into the shop, lost my balance and hit my head on a crate of stock. I passed out and although I was wearing a high visibility vest, that was it in terms of health and safety equipment, I woke up 15 minutes later, I went to report it but I was laughed at.”

Mr Haylett added, “Nimesh’s experience just goes to show that cutting corners does exist and more should be done to nip this sort of behaviour in the bud. The powers that be are still governing the industry, even though the credit crunch is in full swing, and falling sales will not be accepted as an excuse for inadequate safety measures at work.”

Decon Safety With Total Protection UK

Total Protection UK, the safety equipment and service specialists are making inroads in communication with the introduction of the Mass Decon Kit, eradicating problems with communicating, due to protective suits and facemasks, improper use of radios and ineffective communication with ER and incident commanders.

Sales and Marketing director at Total Protection UK, Mark Haylett said, “Communicating when wearing a protective suit or breathing apparatusis a major problem for many, especially those in the hospital decontamination industry. This is why the Mass Decon Kit from Con-Space Communications, is a great set of accessories that can be attached to your portable radio and are configured to work in conjunction with facemasks and protective suits.”

Revolutionising the health and safety equipment industry, the Mass Decon Kit uses built-in voice amplification allowing the user to communicate with patients and other personnel outside of your protective suit and facemask in addition to a portable, full duplex, hands-free intercom system. The hands-free intercom system that is hard-wired to provide continuous two-way voice communication between ER and Incident Commanders from the warm zone & cold zone.

Mr Haylett, whose company offer everything from gas detection equipment, breathing apparatus, noise monitoring equipment and height safety equipment, added, “In a Mass Decon Scenario, the most overlooked problem is typically communication. Regardless of the type of Decon Exercise or Operation, Level A, B and C suits are always a must, just like having adequate voice communication.”

Offering the user with a complete voice communication system that allows each user to communicate on his/her portable radio even while wearing breathing apparatus or protective suits, the Mass Decon Kit includes three CSVA voice amplifiers with lightweight boom microphones, which allow for stand-alone voice amplification through any protective suit or indeed any PAPR.

Each kit also includes four SRVA Push-to-Talk Voice Amplifiers with throat microphones and behind the ear speakers, which act as both a voice amplifier and a remote push-to-talk switch for your portable radio that can be worn underneath either a facemask and/or a protective suit
and finally two SR65M Push-to-Talk Radio Accessories with the Sidewinder
light-weight headset, which act as standalone remote PTT's for the Safety Officer and a Cold Zone medical attendant.

Mr Haylett added, “At Total Protection UK, we are even offering the Enhanced Mass Decon Kit, which expands your voice capabilities to the next level. Since their introduction, both kits have been extremely popular and we believe that this is down to the sheer quality of each kit provided by Con-Space Communications. Any customers seeking advice on either which kit to choose or indeed advice on the intended purpose of the kit should call us and our experienced team will be very happy to help them.”
